District Profile & Facts

BACKGROUND

Bugweri District was created in FY 2018/19 being curved out of Iganga District in the Eastern part of the country.  According to 2024 census the District has got a total population of 211,511 people, of which male are 99,283 and female: 112,228. The district has got a total fertility rate of 5.4 children per woman, higher than the national average and the Busoga sub-region population growth rate for period between 2014 to 2024 is 2.1% lower than the national average of 2.9%. The District has total of 46,584 households and an average household size of 4.5, slightly higher than the average household size of 4.4 of Busoga region. 

SIZE AND TOPOGRAPHY/LAND AREA

The District is sitting on 378.9 Sq. Km most of which is land.  The land surface is characterized by gentle undulating hills. The land is mainly used for settlement, establishments such as public institutions.  There is high reliance on land for livelihoods for crop growing and brick laying. However, human activities such as construction, charcoal burning as energy for cooking have led to environmental degradation, affecting climate change and soil fertility.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

More than 70 percent of the population are engaged mainly in small scale farming. The major crops grown are: maize (90 percent) and Beans (3 percent). A few households are engaged in medium scale and commercial farming. Some households are engaged in animal raring, especially.
