Operation Wealth Creation (OWC): Fostering Commercial Agriculture and Household Incomes in Bugweri District
The Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) program, a presidential initiative launched in July 2013, is a key intervention by the Government of Uganda aimed at achieving national socio-economic transformation. Its core focus is to raise household incomes and create wealth by transforming subsistence farmers into commercial farmers, thereby moving a significant portion of the population into the money economy. In Bugweri District, OWC works closely with our local government structures to drive this agricultural revolution.
Key Objectives of OWC:
- To mobilize communities to actively engage in commercial agricultural activities, boosting household incomes.
- To ensure equitable and timely distribution of essential agricultural production inputs (like seeds, seedlings, and livestock) to enhance productivity at the household level.
- To facilitate rural technological upgrading, enabling smallholder farmers to embrace modern farming techniques and value addition.
How it Works in Bugweri: OWC operates through a collaborative framework involving the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) and various technical departments of the District Local Government, particularly the Production Department. OWC teams work on the ground to sensitize farmers on improved agricultural practices, identify priority commodities suitable for our district, and facilitate the distribution of high-quality inputs directly to farmers and farmer groups. The program also emphasizes value addition and market linkages to ensure farmers get better returns for their produce.
Our Impact and Progress: In Bugweri, OWC has significantly contributed to diversifying agricultural production and increasing farmer engagement in commercial ventures. Through the provision of inputs and technical guidance, many households have seen improvements in their yields and incomes. We continue to work hand-in-hand with OWC to address challenges, strengthen agricultural value chains, and promote sustainable farming practices, aligning with the broader goals of poverty eradication and wealth creation in our district.
