Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP): Empowering Youth for Self-Reliance in [District Name]
Content: The Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP) is a strategic Government of Uganda initiative under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, specifically designed to address youth unemployment and poverty across the country. In Bugweri District, we are actively implementing YLP to empower our young population (aged 18-30 years) with the necessary skills, financial support, and entrepreneurial mindset to establish sustainable income-generating activities.
Key Objectives of YLP:
- To provide interest-free financial support to eligible youth groups for establishing viable enterprises.
- To equip youth with essential business management, entrepreneurial, and life skills.
- To foster self-employment and job creation opportunities among the youth, reducing their vulnerability.
How it Works in [District Name]: The District's Community Based Services Department is the lead implementer of YLP. We facilitate the formation of Youth Interest Groups (YIGs) of 10-15 members (with at least 30% female representation) from the same village. These groups are then sensitized, trained, and guided through the process of developing project proposals. Upon approval, interest-free revolving funds are disbursed directly to these groups to kickstart their chosen income-generating ventures, which can range from agriculture to trade, services, and light manufacturing.
Our Impact and Progress: YLP has significantly contributed to improving the economic well-being of many young people in Bugweri. Through this program, youth have been able to engage in various enterprises, improving their household incomes and fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship. While the program is a revolving fund, continuous monitoring and follow-up are conducted to ensure judicious utilization of funds and promote high recovery rates for sustainable impact.
